why is there a huge draw on battery when trying to start it?

I have a 1996 mazda protege put new distributor coil on it because mechanic said it was coil pack or coil. Now when trying to start it there is a huge draw on battery when cranking engine like battery is low or dead? Put battery in car with chrysler 440 engine turned engine over fast and started every time. Is it the starter or something else. engine on mazda engine is not frozen or have broken rods or crank turns over fine just slow and battery draw when using starter.
