Why is my engine temperature light on and goes off when the heater is turned on?

Engine temperature light came on. Coolant is full and no leaks found. Possible thermostat issue ?

IF only in stop and go driving conditions - possible radiator cooling fan problem .. Yes also possible thermostat issue as well. Now - if I’m not mistaken there is an actual TEMPERATURE GAUGE in the dash - what is that gauge reading when the light is on?
