What is your question?
I just replaced my head. Replaced all gaskets, de-carboned the intake manifold, etc. When the motor is "cold" (it is 90 degrees outside, so not really "cold"), it idles up at about 2K for a minute. Then the idle drops down and surges (idles up and down) for about a minute, then when warm, idles down to about 1200 RPM. I believe it is a air leak or emissions related issue. No error codes are thrown, and I have replaced both O2 sensors about a month ago. Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for the quick reply, Pushrod. The cooling system is full - both the radiator and recovery tank. This morning I ran the motor at about 84F ambient, and the motor didn't surge at idle. However, once warm, the idle is still 1200 RPM. Unfortunately, a second issue has presented itself. After I replaced the head three days ago I noticed oil leaking from the #2 cylinder by the exhaust port. On Monday I re-tightened the head bolts, and although they weren't loose, I thought it couldn't hurt to tighten them a bit more and the leak went away. While warming up the motor this morning, I noticed oil is leaking from this area again. The question is why the leak? I replaced the head gasket about eight years ago with no issues. The cylinder block is assumed good because the last head didn't leak (although it may have deformed equally with the head). Thoughts?
This replacement head... new... recon or used?... Did you straight edge it and the block?...., Dont really matter but 1.6 or 1.8?
It is a 1.8L reconditioned head from a place in Texas. It was pressure tested, new valve seals, ground valves, etc...Everything was straight and level on both the head and the block. I have worked on many inline four motorcycle engines in the past and never had oil come out of the head gasket area. I am not even sure how it could get there, as I really don't know the passages from the oil pump to the head. It seems odd to me it would be at cylinder number 2 though....
Pretty sure the oil passage is in the front of the cylinder head/block.... Drain back ... well never looked... no reason to! This is unusual but that is about all i got as this engine is fairly bulletproof....
