The rear main engine oil seal is the seal that keeps the engine oil inside the crankcase at the back of the crankshaft. This seal, when failing, will allow oil to the outs of the back of the engine. The oil will typically leak between the engine and transmission mating area, as that is where the crankshaft exits the engine and the transmission bolts up.
