What should we check when car wont start and just ticks

First suspect is the alternator has failed and the battery is now discharged .. Can try to jump start but keep in mind that 'IF' the alternator isn't keeping the battery charged, the engine WILL stall again - which can be unsafe in traffic .. At this point, you might want to consider calling for a tow truck.
