On dash broad under my clock the words TRIP A just appeared

That is most likely the trip-odometer showing the miles traveled for trip A .. Push the button there near the speedometer and it should show mileage traveled for trip B .. Push it again and it should show the current 'overall mileage' on the vehicle .. See your owners manual for more details, index is in back of book.
