What can cause the car not to move out of park?

(1997 Chevrolet Malibu)
in Lancaster, PA on January 02, 2013
I parked the car at 5a and went to use is again around noon & it wouldn't come out of park. My back passenger brake light has been out for awhile, not sure if that could have anything to do with it.

Check to see if any brake lights work now, if not repair defective brake light(s) then replace blown stoplight fuse!
That will let the trans. shift. That is my guess.
