Was working fine stop at store 10 mins when put in reverse would not engage either direction
How long has your 2003 Ford Taurus had this problem?

This is a fairly common problem with this transmission, below is a good explanation of what happens: The most common problem for engagement loss with this transmission is the pump drive gear in the torque converter..The splines in this gear strip and cannot turn the pump resulting in total pressure loss.. This is easily verified by comparing the fluid level with the engine off and then with the engine on.. If the pump is ok the fluid level should be much lower with the engine running then with the engine off.. Remember after you shut it off to give it a few moments before checking for the fluid to drain back.. If the level stays close to the same then I would suspect that is your problem. If the transmission pan was dented or pushed up or in at all this can also cause the filter to break, crack or dislodge causing the pump to airlock which would also cause engagement loss.
