What is your question?
This tick is very metallic. NOT a KNOCKING NOISE! Please I can tell the difference.Tick matches valve train component speed exactly.I'm thinking cam follower.Whats inside the follower that can fail causing this loud TICK? Can I run the engine w/out camcover to pinpoint this tick? You know (old school)pushing on parts until the noise changes while motor is running?Or a good diagram showing a breakdown of valve train. This noise isn't like broken valve spring, chipped piston skirt, etc.I think theres slack somewhere in the valvetrain.Local mechanics get fuzzy eyed when I ask if they have ever been inside a northstar other than to replace a gasket. Please I'm semi-retired and on a budget. Thanks Louwelds.
Thank you for reply.Question:Why not check w/engine idling? Are coil packs a problem?I would only need to run motor for about 60 seconds. Are followers pump-up style? Wouldn't this be a problem when checking for loose components? Is this top end tick common/uncommon to the Northstar engine? This car has been running/driving since purchase for about 1000 miles before I heard noise(tick).Obviously previous owner was aware of problem.Hello everyone:LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!!My fault,I take full blame.Anyway motor runs strong thru full RMP range.Tick not there @650rpm but @750 rpm, ouch! Can I just slacken chain tensioner, unbolt cam sprocket, remove cam caps and get @ followers and inspect valve stem tips? I have a strong background in small/big block Chevs and English/Italian motorcycles.Again many thanks,Louwelds.
