seriously loud knocking when engine speed increased is it possibly an injector

Hi all my son inlaw has a 350 e61 diesel and recently got me to check out a tapping noise coming from his engine. It turned out to be swirl flaps had broken I removed all of the offending parts and fitted blanking plates. All was going well for a few more thousnd miles until yesterday when he developed a loud knocking noise on the way home. He called out recovery AA. who told him one of his injectors is leaking. Is this common to make such a loud knocking noise I have heard (diesel knock) but never this loud. the noise is only present when the engine speed is increased,plus there is a missfire while its ticking over. ps the drop down box at the top of this page doesn't give the option of a diesel derivative.
