Car overheating thermostat does not seem to be opening when the temperature hits around 280 the thermostat opens and it will take more antifreeze
What seems to make the problem better or worse? Thermostat will not open and keep engine cool

I agree - there is a problem and operating an engine at that temperature will certainly cause more serious troubles.

280 degrees is awfully hot for a thermostat to wait to open. Can you confirm that this is the case though? Do you have a diagnostic tool reading coolant temperature sensor? Can you verify coolant flow?
