Do you have the replacement starter with you?From what I can find , it looks like 2 bolts and a dowel pin , maybe a support brace on the back end? Does it wiggle at all? Maybe stuck on dowel pin , corroded or rusted?

On S90 volvo there is bracket with 2 nuts at the back of the starter after moving the 2 nuts, the starter should be free.

On S90 volvo there is bracket with 2 nuts at the back of the starter after moving the 2 nuts, the starter should be free.
