Broken or dislodged axle shaft.. IF either axle is no longer being engaged due to breakage or dislodgment - the differential is still spinning when shifting back into park - thus the loud grinding noise.. Good luck!
So it would be the front axel shaft which needs to be repaired? Ok dumb question here but even though the car doesn't accelerate when put into drive does it mean the transmission is ok?
Transmission is working - that’s what makes the differential rotate. I say it’s just an axle problem - speedometer probably still works - vehicle just can’t move. This isn’t a common failure but I have seen it quite a few times over the years - various vehicles. ⚠️ Vehicle may still roll while transmission is in PARK ⚠️ Apply park brake.
