What is your question?
Hi, I am looking to purchase a t5 transporter. I had a pre purchase inspection completed by a VW mechanic who reported that the fly wheel was making a rattling noise when in reverse. He went on to recommend a replacement for 2.5k aud. Just wondering if this is a common issue for this make model, it only has 160k km so though that it was odd but I'm not a mechanic!?? Can I keep driving it with a rattle on the fly wheel? Do I need to change it immediately? Whats the worst thing that could happen? Thanks in advance. Lachlan
What makes this problem better or worse?

How long has your 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon had this problem?

If it were me, I'd probably wait on it until the concern of noise became a concern of performance. Proactively, yes, it's a good idea to replace it if what was physically inspected was indeed accurate. But you may wish to get a second opinion locally to be sure. A flywheel that has a noise would also possibly create harmonic vibration which could cause vehicle vibration concerns while running, and in severe cases cause a check engine light com eon.
I disagree with the VW mechanic! ... Shifting into reverse makes no difference as far as the “flywheel†is concerned.. Agree a second opinion is needed..
Any noise caused by flywheel failure would be constant regardless of gear selection..
