What is your question?
VW Tiguan, 2012, 80,000 miles. Check engine came on. Took auto to garage, a VW Dealership. Said turbo was gone and it needed to be replaced. It cost $2,800. How do I know if the turbo really needed to be replaced? Do I need the turbo to operate auto?

Through the years I have come to realize there really is no “normal” when it comes to mechanical or electrical failures - stuff happens! Yes - you’ll need to have the turbo repaired before engine performance will be satisfactory. Good luck.
I have also come to notice ‘European’ vehicles in general seem to be less dependable than their counterparts - and more expensive to repair .... Just saying.
