catalytic converter replaced 2x only has 100,000 miles

WHY was it replaced? Do not say "because of code XXXX", Either it was defective or the engine is not running correctly (YES , even though the check engine light may not be on , the engine can still be running less than optimum). Running rich , lean , misfires??
