What is your question?
I recently bought a 2004 Jetta with 172,000 miles. There were no problems when I tried it out. Right afterwards I had to have leg surgery and haven’t been able to drive, so the car sat in the garage for 3 months. Now I can’t get it into reverse. Yesterday I added transmission fluid with no luck. The other gears are fine and there are no noises or leaks.

Have experienced mechanic perform MANUAL LOW test - that will determine if reverse band is the culprit. This test can be done during short test drive... It just involves manually shifting into low gear at the correct speed. I do not recommend this test to be attempted by the DIYer. Good luck!
You may need to seek out a transmission specialist - this test is old school and most of the younger general repair techs aren’t going to understand.. However it is a bulletproof test when performed correctly ! Once upon a time AAMCO Transmissions offered free diagnosis with no repair commitment.
