My rearview mirror is ready to fall off and I'd like to know the best way to glue it back on. I was told by an auto parts store to go to a window repair shop. They said they would try to glue it back on, but if it doesn't work, I will have to have the windshield replaced. Could this be true? Or is there a special glue that should be used?

Loctite make a product I believe it is called Loctite 312. Many of these rear view mirror adhesives require use of an activator used first to clean the windscreen and prepare the windscreen, all of the adhesives seem to cure better on a warm day and don't set up well at in cooler ambient temperatures.
Any windshield repair place should be able to help with this. They could at the least recommend an adhesive to use, if they don't perform the repair for you. If there isn't damage to the windshield, I don't see why you'd have to replace the windshield.
The person before me answered correctly by using a Loctite Windsheild Button Glue. Its a 2 part system. The Glass must be clean and the primer is applied to both the glass and button. Then the resin is applied to the mirror button. A very small amount. Just a DOT. Take the button to where you sprayed the primer, and hold it for about 5 seconds to the windshild. However and I can not stress this, make sure the button is correctly positioned, being once bonded, you can not remove it from the windshield. The resin is always applied to the flat side of the button. The arrow shape is at the top. The button must be totally clean as well. Using a razor and scraping off the old glue is needed. You may accually use the primer to help you loosen the glue from the button. For further information go to www.auto-glass.com/carmirror.htm
