What is your question?
Battery is new and Alternator is charging at 17.5v. When the car is started, the gauges do not work. When it is put in drive, the gauges suddenly work. When put in park and the gas pedal pushed, the gauges stop working again. I understand that I need to replace the alternator but want to see if there may be other issues
How long has your 2002 Volkswagen Golf had this problem?
Few days

Alternator voltage output will vary somewhat with engine rpms - less voltage at lower rpms .. Shifting into gear lowers rpm + alternator output.. HOWEVER when rpms increase so does alternator voltage - so instruments should be inop while driving down highway - IF excessive alternator output is indeed the culprit.. You can disconnect the alternator wiring connector or simply remove the drive belt for testing purposes.. ** Do gauges still malfunction with alternator eliminated ?? **
