2014 VW Beetle, trunk won't open. There is nothing stuck in it, I have opened the plastic covering, Not finding how to unlatch off of actuator?

The electric sound when we try to open it is still there.. not a fuse problem. The latch will not open. There is no emergency release inside the car. And now the plastic wall is off the back and we are unable to find the release from the latch itself.
Any help would be appreciated. There is no info at all about these problems online that I am finding.

Remove rear seat back to access trunk area - remove trim panel and manually unlock then raise trunk lid.
