Door check strap, driver side convertible, broke off(?) on door end. How to fix?

Door started making clicking/clunking noise when opening, then strap broke off apparently at door end. Strap in body now. Dealer wants to replace door.

How long has your 2009 Volkswagen Beetle had this problem?

Take vehicle to local auto repair facility or paint and body shop for *hands-on* inspection .. Be surprised at what an experienced old school mechanic can do! Got to think outside the box - dealer only knows one route to take.. Good luck!
