Door check strap, driver side convertible, broke off(?) on door end. How to fix?

Door started making clicking/clunking noise when opening, then strap broke off apparently at door end. Strap in body now. Dealer wants to replace door.

How long has your 2009 Volkswagen Beetle had this problem?

Only lasted for 2-3 days before breaking.
