Why are the end ofmy Vw plug wires wrapped in metal? I heard they are heat protectors. I need to get to the spark plugs but l don't know how...PLEASE TELL ME

Why? I've replaced many plugs and wires, I need an answer that will help me....lost my job,car failed smog,can't get c.a.p. please if you are a professional.....you should have another answere for me!
