What is your question?
Car starts and runs for about 30 seconds then quits. Can start right back up and it does the same thing. Replaced fuel filter but didn't change anything.

I would check your Immobilzer and your Electronic Throttle Module. You need a scan tool for this. This is a pretty common problem on these vehicles. Did your battery ever go dead? I ask this because this often wipes out the Immobilzer adaption and the Electronic Throttle Module will not function, meaning the car will start and die, start and die until this is corrected. Any Check Engine Lights? If so there could be some helpful codes stored to help solve this mystery. This is a comment to osita. Yes, this is what can happen to a VW if the battery goes dead. The Immobilzer and the Electronic Throttle need to be reset. I have done this several times for VWs whose batteries have gone dead. this is to Osita. You can take your car to a very good VW shop that has a VAG ( the VW factory scan tool and reprogramming tool ). Have the technicans do a full system scan and reset ALL the adaptions and then recheck the status of all the systems. It should not take more than an hour of shop time ($100 or so ) As for the battery going dead, it is critical to have a really great battery in these cars. I recommend the Interstate Megatron series. Most batteries from generic parts stores are bunk.
If the immobilizer logo , a beetle in silhouette at the instrument cluster , is flashing while the the engine is running the immobilizer is indeed activated and will need attention.
This happened to me yesterday (2003 turbo vw beetle), the car would start and then immediately turn off. Last fall I had the battery replaced so I knew it could not be the battery. I had it towed to a vw dealership and they said that the computer locked out and so they had to reboot the computer. I asked them what caused this but they said they did not know. Cost $105 for this repair.
This comment is for dandd. Is this going to happen to me again soon? I am afraid to drive it now for fear of being stranded. Should I take it back immediately to the dealership and ask them to reset the immobilizer and the Electronic Throttle? How much will this cost?
Same thing happened to me on a 1996 Altima, would start and idle but put it in gear and drive for about a minute it would die. replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, we checked everything in fuel and electrical, nothing. Plugs were a little burnt but not that bad so we put in new plugs and it started and ran like new
Seems as though i may have an immolibizer problem as the check engine light is on too. Thanks for the tips.
