hmm never had this problem with my 1992 or 1997 tercel/s and this part of northern Florida gets very cold and freezing at times,. hmm 1991 is that a fuel injected or carburetor design on that model,. if its fuel injected it might be a few things like changing out the fuel filter also it might be time to replace the Spark-Plug Wires and Rotor and Distributor.. this Item Please to yourself a favor and get them at the dealer even so it cost more,. you want what came off of the production line for that item.. and only replace your spark plugs with either Toyota Plugs or NGK plugs are very good for Toyo's I learned this going back to a 1979 toyo corolla with a 3kc eng,. there electronic ignition systems pick up the variance in the Resistance differences of Aftermarket plug wires / rotors & distributor caps and spark plugs too,. seems guanine Toyota or NGK or Denso parts work much better for the Ignition replacement parts,. also when its cold ware your at is the humidity high and very damp when you try and start the car ? these are good indications its time to do a good tune up When replacing the Distributor cap and rotor careful not to scratch or damage the Pick up coil wire/s I did this on the 92 once and it was one hell of a job locating that problem that was solved with 5cents of RVT to fix the scratched coil wire,. another post recommended checking that temperature sensors aren't faulty,. even on my old 1979 corolla it had some kind of shut down sensor from sudden temp changes when I was flushing out the radiator.. which is a good to protect the motor from damage from an iced up motor,. or causing the motor block to crack from sudden temp change/s. but it this sounds like its time for a good tune up and TLC maintenance here.
