Actually that's not strange at all..... On 'this' vehicle... The lockout in the steering column that keeps you from turning the key to the off position while driving down down the road thinks the shifter is not in the PARK position... When you unhook the battery cable, it can't keep you from turning the key to the off position cause 'this one' doesn't work without battery power! ..Problem more than likely is the 12 volt solenoid in the shifter assembly is sticking.. 'Try' spraying a BUNCH of WD-40 at the base of the shifter while shifting from park to low then back to park several times.. Compressed air will also help.. Coffee and soda tends to makes things sticky when spilled into the shifter assembly!! .. Good luck!
Try leaning shifter to the right while putting it in park works for me
