What is your question?
Dealer repair estimate $3100 part /heater box assembly. $1400 labor. Cause of ‘damage’ unknown. 45000 miles dealer regular maintenance, no accidents, only reasonable solution is used part or trade in. What is the cause and should I get a used part. When turning temp control down from heat to cool, clicking noise like a water bottle for a few seconds then noise stops. Went for second opinion. The doors on these assemblies seem to be designed poorly, not just a Toyota issue but common with other manufacturers. The door cannot be purchased separately from the housing. New part is a $3000 assembly. Used part can get by with just the housing/case. Repair with new part seems absurd. Repair with used part seems like a crap shoot if I don’t know why this happens in the first place and I’ll get almost no warranty.
What makes this problem better or worse?
Nothing
How long has your 2015 Toyota RAV4 had this problem?

Have an old school - seasoned mechanic that can think outside the preverbal box take a look at this for you.. MANY TIMES the mindset of younger - less experienced auto repair personnel is replacement only. Personally I strongly believe otherwise! Good luck!
There’s got to be an alternative here - finding the person that can conceive the alternative is the key.
Thank you! My mechanic thinks out of the box. Unfortunately, that door comes assembled to the core housing, and is not working. The door. With plastic cogs I’m guessing. Finding that door seems Unlikely. Maybe a $3 door, but who knows. Makes no sense but I’m not a mechanic. I’m blonde, female, and stupid. Correction, I’m not stupid, I’m just stunned. Thanks again. Will probably trade it in after mechanic repairs with used housing
Nobody has seen the part because you have to tear the dash apart. I’m gonna look at a used part when it comes in. Then get the old part back if we fix it. Makes sense to little old me!
Started mechanicing ~ 1972 in ‘RURAL’ Virginia, foothills of the Blue Ridge mountings.. ‘That’ IS old school. Have ‘manufactured’ replacement parts by default as there were no other ‘logical’ or reasonable choices... ONLY parts store back then was NAPA - or the dealerships. I honestly think I could have put “Humpty Dumpty” back together again! Good luck with the outcome!
Thanks pushrod. For future reference to all, the part number is 87050-12420 vin JTMRFREV. My car was built in Canada not Japan.
