What is your question?
Only in gear it makes a ticking noise and always have to keep foot on gas. Ticking noise is loud and repeating consistently and gets faster as you speed up. Can feel it when ticks eventually valves got bent and had to get valve job and ported because it ran hot
What makes this problem better or worse?

Perhaps the problem is and always has been a worn connecting rod bearing - down on the bottom end.. *Hands-on* evaluation is required - IF you know which cylinder - remove that cylinders plug wire from distributor cap - start engine - will have a misfire but this is to see if noise disappears.. Post results.
We have got to know WHAT bent the valves !
It won’t currently start after heads were done and put back together and it never knocked in park or neutral so cant be that
Engine is operating WITHOUT a load in park / neutral.... Just saying. The plug wire removed test works like a charm btw. Make SURE timing belt is installed correctly - engine is in time! Keep hammering on it - you’ll get there! Good luck!
