why does the wiper stop - with open window the motor seems to run ok and I have lubricated the heck out of the wiper shaft

Flip up the plastic cover at the base of the wiper arm and check the retainer nut, it's possibly loose and just needs to be tightened up... Wiper motor AND wiper arm both need to be in the PARKED position before tightening the retainer nut!
thanks but done that - wiper still stops
You stated the motor is still turning .. Have you looked to see if the *shaft* is still turning when wiper arm stops? .. No reply now, ok well > Good luck to ya!
hi - shaft stops too
Replace motor assembly!
motor works - took apart the wiper arm mechanism - not too tough - first took off wiper arm. Next removed rubber guard, then large nut. Next trick was to remove locking washer - ended up drilling a hole in it til I could wiggle it off (could have just drilled it off and got another). Once off shaft came out from the inside. It was all corroded - sandpaper cleaned it and greased it up. Put it all back together - wiper works as good as new.
yay
Yes! This was a $4 solution!! Thank you!
