What is your question?
After starting the vehicle, I put my foot on the break pedal but the shifter still won't come out of park.
How long has your 2001 Toyota Highlander had this problem?
one week

Odds are it's 1 of 2 things that may be the simplest of answers that I've noticed with my vehicle. 1-you may need to depress brake pedal more than the one time to get actuator in shifter to engage and allow you to shift into either reverse or forward gears. 2-push the gear shift up/forward to get the tension off of the internal shiftknobs lockout mechanism, before you depress brake pedal. Depress brake pedal now and then you should be able to shift out of park.... Hope that helps at least someone and that this info wasn't too late after you jumped the gun and got rid of your car for possibly nothing. If so, better luck next time genius. 😎😁🤪
IF no - check for blown stoplight fuse.. Common problem especially if wired for towing - (additional wiring)
