what does it mean when the low beam headlight indicator on the dash stays on

Hi beam indicator, most likely the dimmer switch which is part of the multifunction switch! Do the lights actyally switch from hi to low beam and back? If so then does the indicator change in brightness at the time you dim/brighten the lights?
