so 2 days later the warning light came on again so the machanic said it was the fuel system thry fixed & he turned the light off & told me if it comes on again to bring it back to him how will i know if i am doing more harm with the light turned off ?

It’s a good thing you’re concerned about possible damage resulting from continued vehicle operation with the service engine soon light on ! .... However in this case an EVAP system failure isn’t going to cause any harm.
