Fortunately for car owners (unfortunat for technicians)carmakers started using timing chains again. These modern timing chains last as long as the lifetime of engine. Toyota realized (with along other carmakers) that chain the way to go . Mercedes never built cars with timing belt.Last week i replaced a timing chain on a 1990 Mercedes model 124 with 2.5L diesel engine that has 1.2 million kilometer That was the 2nd chain replacement on that car since was new and i just finihed a timing chain replacement a hour ago a 1998 BMW 525 TDS That is a 2.5 Liter Turbo Diesel engine. This car had 470.000 Km -on it. BMW tried to using timing belt on early '90s but then they give up on it after a few years. Belts are need to be changed more often.
it was a 1972 toyota hylux truck that bit the dust. my dad put the engine from a toyota corona station wagon into the truck. we kept taking parts off that corona as we needed them. i called the doors on the truck soshi screens, paper thin. sold the truck in 92 for 300. it sold in 15 minutes after putting it out on us hwy 19n with a sign. the floor rusted thru and we riveted the floors with tin. talk about oil leak. as i remember, driving back and forth from ky to florida I-75, seeing newer cars broken down, i never did. it cost me 25.00 to drive from ky to florida in 1980 something and i bought some food at a taco bell. no radio, no air, no power anything, stick. pukey green. my dad had a mercedes in the 70's. i have a pic somewhere. i think some cars (not always a particular brand)are prone to probs. it can happen. i almost bought a honda. i have one pic of that truck. this toyota is the nicest car i've ever had and the 2nd car that didn't leave a puddle everywhere i parked. toyota wanted to give me a 10k trade-in at toyota for a 2010 corolla. i wanted to trade for an impala. this car has racing heads. they didn't all have that i understand. i didn't know that when i bought it. that's why the mechanic wanted it so bad. they called me at my house after i left the dealership. the car runs nice. darn, my complaint is my car is SOOOOO small compared to everything else on the road. little scared of that. there's no way to put a bicycle on the back of it. can't tow any thing. with the ground effects, i can't put it on a ramp, have to pull it. it's so impractical and that's not my life. where do you live? you are talking kilometers. that truck was so much easier to work on than this one. one good thing is that if i do stall, i can push start this car. i've had to do it before with other cars i've owned. i tied a muffler up with rawhide one time and my dad says i'm glad you don't work for american airlines. i had cars i had to work on in parking garages and parking lots and everywhere. i remember those days. the muffler fell out in the middle of the street. i think that was the truck. lol i had to stop and go back and get it. lol what do you think about impalas? thanks, diane
A 10 years old camry is better then a new Impala. Corolla is lil smaller but they good cars too.
oh good, thanks. my dad says that you have to replace a timing belt and do not have to replace a timing chain. so, that's good news. YEARS ago, he had a toyota with a belt and it broke and that was the end of that car. we used it for parts to keep other toyotas running. we had our own private junkyard until he had it towed away one day. i remember pulling parts off of it. thanks very much.
