Do you have a vacuum gauge?? If so , hook it up engine side of the throttle plate and describe the readings #s at idle and at 2000rpm. Steady above 18" or jumpy , or as you speed up does the vacuum decrease , the more detail the better.
cat converter check exhaust for any blockage
good thinkin forgot to mention I already looked at the cat... and on the vacuum I forgot today was my birthday and have had family here all day and havnt had the chance yet guess I have to put it off another day
My 91 Celica is doing the same thing, we have replaced everything you replaced except water filter and will aim to check the EGR today and cat converter on Monday. jhanson, did you ever resolve the problem with yours?
I sure did!!! I decided to do a complete overhaul everything new to spec except the block it just got new paint job. Lol. But in the process found the number 1 head bolt was broke. Which was strange because it passed the vacuum test.
I won't be doing that...I'm attached to the car but I can't keep trying endlessly.. Thanks for your reply, I'm sure yours is a beauty!
Know how you feel there. The only reason this car gets the special treatment is because it was my sister's and she passed, then it was stolen and wrecked. When I got it back I had this desire to return to its flawless state when my sister had it. Altho I have done upgrades to the motor I havnt and won't do anything that she wouldn't have. Reguardless you can overhaul these motors at a real reasonable price. You really have no reason to touch the bottom end if it's not knocking but why not when you can get main and rod bearings for $50. Your problem is somewhere in the top end whether it's the head isn't sealed good cuz of warpage or s crack somewhere or you have vacuum leak somewhere. If it is your head you can find re-man's for a couple hundred bucks complete with valves and cams. I even have an extra I could sell ya. Good luck to you and let us know how it all works for you.
Awe... That's awesome! I can definitely understand why it's special. I really won't give up yet, I've owned 3 Celica's and only Celica's my whole life. My Dad bought me and my sister ('80 &'81) Celica's in high school as our first cars, then later we both replaced them with an ('83 & '84). Later, in 1997 my other sister & I bought '(91 & '92) Celica's and have been driving them ever since... Two paint jobs later and chrome wheels, they still look hott ;0). They have been pretty much problem free and I still walk away and check "her" out, it is by far the oldest car in the parking lot at my work but it still makes me smile when I compare it against most others. Thanks for the info, I'll keep trying ;0)
Of course I do... I will check tomorrow. The EGR has been removed there is a block off plate and the pipe plugged underneath the vacuum lines ha are a mess so I'm sure that's a lot of the problems
