This is because the vehicle's charging system does not produce optimal charging power until the engine speed reaches about 2,000 RPM -- which is a typical nominal engine speed reached during normal driving. With limited driving, maximum accessory use (ventilation system, lights, audio, electronics, and so on), and even the heat of your Vegas summer -- a battery would deteriorate quickly. Limiting short trips and driving for longer increments will help preserve battery life. And absolutely do not run vehicle accessories of any kind with the engine off!
