Toyota dealer is saying they need to be replaced. Should they be? Car is 9 years old a KBB value of 6K. I'm getting quotes for about $1000 to 1300. Seems high.

First, what engine do you have? 4 cylinder or V6? On the V6, for example, each mount is between $150 - $200 or so, and there are 3 of them. Parts alone approaches $600. Then you have labor of 4 or 5 hours or so -- and in Southern California, that's likely going to be $700 - $800. Use the Estimator tool on RepairPal to get a range -- but you'll need to know which engines and which mounts. My guess is -- the pricing is about right. Highly recommend *hands-on* inspection / evaluation from independent auto repair facility.. It is always a possibility the engine mounts are failing - however that is NOT an inherent problem for this particular vehicle.. Just ask that the engine mounts be checked at the repair facility.
Additionally - failing engine / transmission mounting should be noticeable to the vehicle operator - vibration while stopped - transmission in drive or reverse - - unusual noises under acceleration..
