Sorry I have no personal knowledge of any independent Toyota repair shop in his area or know the location of the nearest Toyota dealer. The Camry is a great car, we work on a lot of them many of which with proper maintenance have over 300,000 miles on them. Do you know if your son was able to get the service and maintenance records for the car from the previous owner. Any time I buy a car like that that I know I will be keeping it for a long time and need it to be reliable, I look through the service records (so as not to unnecessarily duplicate and previous work), I start by having the car inspected front to rear, prioritize any needed repairs or maintenance, change the engine oil and filter, change the transmission oil (and filter if automatic) flush the coolant and brake fluid. Check that the timing belt has been replaced (if not assume it hasn't) That car (4 or 6 cylinders) has valve clearances that should be measured and adjusted, spark plugs air and fuel filter. Lots of items but at least then you should be able to ensure proper maintenance has been carried out. We have lots of information on this site about the Toyota Camry they are a great car.
First & most important ask what ever shop you go to make sure they have at least one MASTER ASE CERTIFIED TECH. Check RepairPal for shops it shows.
