What is your question?
Last month I spent 1,115.98 replacing a timing belt, water pump, other belts, crank shaft gear and sensor, . Last night I had no oil in my car and the oil pump now has to be replaced. I have 117,000 miles on it. Between last year and this year I have replaced , rear struts, exhaust system, battery, 4 tires, R&R thermostat and gasket, front brake pads and rotor, resonator assembly, wiper blades (3 times), and labor for everything listed. Is this normal? Do I need to sell? I have been going to the same garage. Thanks

Well, actually the shop that did the timing belt should share in the responsibility of not replacing the oil pump seals at that same time .. That's pretty much standard procedure!!! .. Car IS 18+ years old now, (from production date).. Plus those other repairs are normal wear & tear... If you sell this car, what can you get that will provide the same service for same money? .. 'THAT' vehicle is very capable of going 300k miles without MAJOR repair work... I've seen it numerous times... Just saying. ........ I guess it depends on your financial situation..
You have done more than you should have to save this lost cause.......time to cut losses and move on. When repairs cost more than the value of the vehicle, it is time for a change.
Thank-you!
Yes agree with csubak. When repairs cost more than the car it's not worth the trouble. To replace the oil pump in your car is like removing the timing belt all over again since its behind it which will cost a lot on the labor side.
Omgosh. Didn't realize that one. Thanks for the tip.
Thank-you
Sure.... You've just about got it all fixed up now... I'd drive it own, 'IF' it were me!
Remember though that not all Toyotas are created equal. I love toyota for the longevity and durability but, this one may not have the gusto left in it as some of the others. Toyota does have a rep. for pushin' the dial to 300,000 though......
That's true... However in this case I think the oil pump deal should have been taken care of along with timing belt and components.. If it were some other make .. I wouldn't have made such a suggestion... (Maybe Nissan) Now I've seen a bunch of other makes foreign & domestic do over 300k .. but not as consistently!
Thank - you this was very insightful. I am wondering if I receive a bill for say...600-800 dollars, how do I bring this up to the mechanic? Do I ask what caused the problem for my pump to go? Should I ask why the seals weren't replaced when the timing belt was worked on?
You should ask why the pump 'needs to be replaced' and why the oil leaked out... Then post that reply here for more info... Also is this the 4 or 6 cyl engine?
Ok. Yes, it is a 4 cylinder. The mechanic called this morning, told me he ordered a part from the dealership and it will be in by Monday. I can leave a message on his answering machine tonight, but won't get an answer until tomorrow. Thank-you for your help!
Ok, but just ask the questions as stated... We're not accusing anyone of anything, just a couple questions... It's just kinda odd that happened this suddenly after the other work... Would like to know where the oil went and why the pump needs to be replaced, that all... for now.
Absolutely true. I just called and left a message about how I saw that oil was all over everything last night when the Advanced Auto Part guy looked at it, and I forgot to ask this morning ( when I talked to the mechanic ).....what caused the leak, and why does the pump need to be replaced. You have been a great help. We will see what the response is.

I have not heard from the mechanic. Am calling again after lunch.
Here it is as plain and simple as I can put it: With only 117,000 miles on this engine, there is absolutely no reason the oil pump needs to be replaced..... Unless it got damaged 'somehow' (?) .. I know that 2.2L-5SFE engine from inside out!... Not bragging, just stating facts!... The normal proceedure for timing components replacement is : New belt, belt tensioner, ldler, water pump, camshaft and crankshaft seals plus the oil pump outer body rubber seal/gasket and pump shaft seal...valve cover gasket set and PCV valve... If that is done correctly, there is no reason for the oil to leak out nor should the oil pump need replacing!
Thank-you for your expertise :) I really had hoped that the mechanic would have called today, before Monday. On Monday, the part will be in, and Tues it should be fixed. Once he has printed out my bill ( and without talking to him today, not really sure how much this is going to cost me), I am not sure how to discuss the damages, especially if the bill is excessively high. Like you mentioned, I have no proof if there was any wrong doing.
Not saying there was anything done wrong... Just need an explanation as to why oil leaked out and oil pump needs to be replaced... That's it! .. Hope it works out ok for you.
Thanks again for your enlightening inoformation. I hope it does too!! Just wanted to let you know that I received a bill for 609.00 395.00 was labor. Never received a response to my question.
Changing the seal on the oil pump will cost a little more because you have to remove the pan and other components. I think the mechanic was lazy and gets paid by the hour and wanted to get home. A timing job is a lot simpler ,I know because I did the job on my 1997 toyota camry le .when I opened my timing cover up it was a mess I bought the kit on part geeks for 87 $. That's everything .I put it all in and saw a leak coming from the oil pump side. I bought the oil pump peice costed 174 at AutoZone and put it and now my car runs more stronger and never gets hot.Another hundred thousand miles guarantee .a oh the peice I bought was a oil pump kit,I changed it because the gear was wobbling like it was going to break off .so it came with a whole gaskit kit so .
