In 1998, Toyota started using the transponder keys on some of these vehicles to help prevent thieft .. 'IF'engine is cranking but will not start .. Suspect vehicle needs correct *transponder key* .. Which you don't have now, with this replacement lock cylinder & key from salvage yard... Why did you replace the lock cylinder? .. There is a way to fix this problem, I think.. Reply for more details.
But im only replacing the ignition barrel with new key, would it have something to do with the imobiliser.
Yes, that's what I was referring to in the first post .. The security system doesn't recognize this key you are using now .. You can take this key AND the old key - to a locksmith and have a new key made - that has the correct transponder chip in it - that will work... Call locksmith for further information.
Ok,is there another way, just that my key gets stuck and wont turn for some reason.it wiil unlock steering wheel but from there on it wont turn nomore only sometimes when i jiggle it.or what if i just replace everything with ignition housing and computer intergration relay would that help.
Howdy Pushrod,,hope ya'll are ok,,been a while,we are in a mess like everyone else and it's Heart Breaking! Question; My 1998 Camry which I love has stumped me? Took it yesterday for safety inspection, went to pull it in the bay, then the key WON'T turn (tried 3 different keys)? I've read/seen all the stories/video's already, bought new key cylinder/keys,but can't get the old cylinder in the Acc position to pull the old cylinder out,NOT TRANSPONDER KEY,the key will not turn only a tiny tiny bit.I know you worked on a car or two in your lifetime (Hee Hee Hee),,,ever seen this? Cylinder is in dash....HELP ME,,,Later! Stuck like Chuck!!!
Hey SR - not much choice but drill out the lock pin then pull the cylinder out - or drill out the key tumblers so the cylinder will turn. I guess you tried hitting the key with a hammer and all the other usual stuff. Can always pull the whole assembly off the column - but that is a right smart of extra work.
10-4! Well I will get the drill out and start with a small bit, maybe 1/8th and see what happens and by the way,the cylinder is in dash not on column, little small cover over the key cylinder which I already have it off and Yep I've tried about everything but when it cools off later, going back to try again. Thanks Steve
Yeah it’s too hot to be fooling around with one now - there’s a bracket attached to the column that holds the lock cylinder also - but you’ll be better off drilling out the locking pin if you can. You’ll get it - just have to keep at it, like always. Later.
Well,Pushrod you were spot on again as always! I don't want to do another one of these key cylinder's on these Toyota's,I have 3 of them now,,,1998 Camry,1995 Corolla and bought a 2004 Sequoia 4.7L in Jan.,a now 73 years young man had bought it new and still looks/drives/smells new, sits 8 people,Leather Seats @97% good and oh boy does that 4.7L love Gasoline! Anyways,I went down there to the shop yesterday where I left it and it had cooled off to around 85 degrees or so,drilled out the lock release with bout 1/4 inch drill bit or so,(started with smaller bit),cylinder came right out. There was NO release button on the old one, just an indention/open hole, glad I brought some carbide bits with me,that is HARD TOUGH METAL,but I got it changed! Thanks again Pushrod,,,SR.
10-4 ! Yeah it’s hard to beat a Toyota. I know exactly what ya mean about the lock cylinder - that one ain’t the easiest to replace for sure.. My old 93 Corolla with 300k plus miles finally needs a water pump - since I’ve retired - I’m thinking about just hiring it done - - hell, I don’t miss it a bit to be honest - especially with these crazy people out there today. Later on, good to hear from ya!
