What is your question?
Mechanic 1 said leak and $500. We didn't trust that guy so we took it to Another trusted shop in town. Mechanic 2 said no leak and can't locate the problem. Thinks it could be a sensor or fan isn't blowing enough air. Mexhanic 2 is gonna have friend take a look and possible use computer to help diagnose. Any ideas? We are trying to not spend a bunch on this car if it's not gonna last. But we don't have much options.

Which engine? .. Cooling fans working? .. Under what conditions does overheating occur? .. While stopped - extended idling? .. Highway speeds - going up grade? .. Adding coolant frequently or occasionally? .. More details needed for a more accurate answer.
Sounds like proper diagnosis has not yet been performed. Go back to the shop that actually charged for diagnosis and have them get to the bottom of it. If you are getting collective opinions then that will not help. Thermostat, cooling fans, temp sensor, and cylinder head leakage needs to be tested.
Appreciate you replying to my question. Thank you! I will certainly ask about these specific things you named. Yes, perhaps we will drive it back to mechanic 1. What do you think of going to dealership? Big waste of money?
$500 is waay too much .. Ask a certified mechanic to check w/computer. I had the same problem (03 Camry)and through process of elimination which I personally changed TEMP SENSOR & THERMOSTAT ($15/$35).. Mechanic was charging $75.. Now the RADIATOR needs to be replaced which I found (Mechanic referred) an AUTO PARTS WEBSITE (www.rockauto.com) that sells NEW PARTS/ NOT USED or REFURBISHED for cheap.. RADIATOR=$45 not including S&H.. Mechanic Labor=$120 (which I'll be doing)... My suggestion is drop the $500 mechanic n get a different estimate if u still want to fix n keep the Toyota.. Hope this info helps
Thank you so much for replying to my question. I don't know the engine of hand. I'll ask my boyfriend. It started overheating when driving on surface streets, there was traffic as roads were closed for construction. I'd say after about 15-20 mins. It was 5.5 miles. Mechanic 2 said it started overheating after idling but it took a while.
IF overheating only occurs at slow speeds (stop & go traffic) or extended idling while vehicle is stopped *but does NOT overheat at highway speeds*.. Suspect radiator cooling fan not functioning properly.
Okay thanks for the suggestion. How is the fan function tested? Also, any clue of the cost of replacing that is? Easy or difficult job?
