Rough idle in drive, but not in Neutral
1 Reply
Usually the result of failed / worn engine / transmission MOUNTS ! Over time - the rubber insulators contained within the mounts deteriorates - this will allow metal to metal contact resulting is rough idle sensation .. While transmission is in park or neutral the mounts are not torqued as opposed to when transmission is shifted into gear. Easily tested by a knowledgeable mechanic.
This becomes more pronounced at lower idle rpm (engine speed) - - ‘slightly’ increasing engine rpms should partiality alleviate the ‘sensation’ of idle roughness. Further *hands-on* testing by qualified personnel will be required... However it is quite likely the culprit will be failed mounts! Good luck!
I have replaced all motor mounts and transmission mounts. It still has a rough idle in drive when the brake is applied. What else can directly affect the idle?
IF idle vibe / roughness goes away with transmission in REVERSE - aftermarket engine mounts are poor quality. Otherwise **HANDS-ON** testing will be required.
