Long pause from reverse to drive

What is your question?

Most mornings, when I pull out of garage in reverse, I cannot pause the car midway in the drive or go back in the garage and then reverse, because the car will not go into drive. The motor just whirls and nothing happens for 20 to 30 seconds all while my foot is on the acelerator.
