The problem started when the car would not accelerate losing power The car was under warranty but the dealership called it vandalism and therefore I was required to pay for the fuel pump replacement. This weekend, the same thing happened ( loss of power) but with back firing, loud noises and a burning smell

I'd say it would have to be vandalism. There is no other feasible way for a piece of cloth to get in there. You may want to contact your insurance Alex
Someone would have to have access to the vehicle via a key or breaking into it to be able to open the fuel fill door in the first place... Just saying.
