I have a 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited. The Multi Information Display that tell how many mile left till empty. Normally when you fill the tank full of gas the display resets to about 300 - 320. When driving the display will start counting down to many miles empty. Example of what has been happening..I fill the car full of gas the display would read 300, i can drive two miles and the display will read 250, look at the display again it may say 275, the display keeps going up and down. This has happened about 3 or 4 times now.. this last time the gas gauge needle did not go to full like it normally does. The needle showed full the next day. I'm not sure if this could be a software issue.
What makes this problem better or worse?
It sometimes makes it better after the tank is full

Hello, the "distance to empty" feature of just about any vehicle is mostly novelty. Your vehicle and it's processor does not have a real way of knowing how your driving habits are, your driving conditions and your specific economy is at any given time. It only calculates based off of available data, cumulatively, and it's not exacting in any way. It's going based off of what is monitored as fuel usage per driving. There is no software issue here. It's best to not live and die by the informational data, and instead go with what your real world experience is. If you drive the car the same way every day in the same weather and the same distance exactly, you will have consistent data. That's not true for any of us, so variables will occur. That said, if you have a fuel sending unit issue which can affect fuel level on a gauge, it will also affect the calculations made as the data will be erroneous. A diagnostic tool with data monitoring capability for various modules will be able to monitor fuel sending unit output so any abnormal variance can be seen, leading to possible troubleshooting.
Even for a ‘professional’ driver - it would be very difficult to get the exact same mileage from every tank full of fuel.. In fact the fuel ‘gauge’ is not a precise instrument - it is a GAUGE to give you a general idea of how much fuel remains in the tank.. Some vehicle makes have a history of in tank sending unit failures - however I have found Toyota in general to be very reliable in this regard - we just do not have any problems with them in the field.
