YES , it is dangerous , especially if you get stuck in the middle of an intersection! What symptom(s) does it have - no-go when in all gears ,or hard to shift ?
I assume you are asking about a car with a manual transmission which could make it hard to get into 1st gear or any other gear. Some gearboxes can be shifted into gears without the clutch. But also the clutch will not allow the car to move forward because of it slipping which could be dangerous.
It revs high when in gear and is sluggish coming out of gears
Depending on how bad the traffic is on your commute (really-only 20 miles? wow that must be nice!)...Whichever you can do the lightest acceleration in would be best. In other words , real easy on the throttle and try like hell not to ride the clutch , that just heats it up more. AND as hontu(#2) said , if you are familiar with shifting (other than 1st and reverse) without using the clutch pedal , that would help--use those damn syncros to your advantge!
Syncros? You are such a help! Lol. Just kidding :).
OK maybe I should have said synchronizer , my bad!
Thank you so much. I think I feel better knowing. I will tell my friends about your website. I'm buying my parts and my mechanic will put it in for $300. What is it that I need? He doesnt speak english. Lol. Suzuki Esteem glx 1.6 1999.
Most good parts places will have complete kits - clutch pressure plate , clutch disc , release bearing and pilot bushing/bearing where applicable. IF it's been slipping for a while , I would strongly recommend getting a new flywheel. I would also recommend being prepared to ask your mechanic about replacing the engines 'rear main seal' while it's all apart. At least it should be checked , if it's not leaking at all , then it might be worth leaving alone-(if it aint broke don't fix it theory on that one). Good luck.
