Thank you for e-mailing us. That could be many things. Kind of like having a pain in your side and asking the doctor to tell you what it is before going to see him. Please give us a call at 757.643.2559 I have some questions.
The white smoke was most likely coolant from a leak hitting the exhaust. If the engine quit running it probably overheated due to low coolant which will cause damage to the internal engine parts. First step would be to find and repair the original coolant leak, then test for head gasket leaks internal and external. The engine will typically suffer from piston slap due to collapsed piston skirts. Never drive a car until it quits because it almost always leads to expensive collatoral damage. Jeff
We have this problem with our outback llbean model and it is the front brake calipers locking up. With ours it jumps when we apply the brakes but also there is usually a slight but notifceable drag or jump when driving after they've locked up. Our repair person says we need them replaced, plus pads, and rotors. We've been dealing with the problem (until we can get it fixed) by not going too heavy on the brakes when possible as they usually will loosen up over time, then lock up again if we apply the brakes too hard.
