Why does the All Wheel drive bind when turning?

The transmission in the 96 legacy shifts fine. It can be driven straight. When turning its the same concept of turning a 4 whell drive on dry pavement. It binds and theirs tension. Why is this? Whats the repair needed? How much does this cost?
