Cruise has stopped working! Check engine light is also on, but I have a new Cat that should take care of that when I put it on. The two are not related are they?

Yes the two are indeed related ... Cruise control becomes inop. by default whenever check engine light illuminates due to a fault code... Fix the original failure and reset memory, cruise should become operational again.
They can be related--or not. Dealer said several years ago I needed a new CAT. At $3000 (their cost) I decided to let it totally fail first. Check engine light would be on in winter months, usually off in summer. Cruise worked fine the entire time. A year and a half ago, cruise stopped working, and check engine light popped on. The CAT had been replaced by this point and was about a year old. Dealer (different) diagnosed as bad dash switch, since the light was not functioning. I said "light has been inoperative since 2004!" They claimed switch was bad, and that cruise would not work if the check engine light was on, and I said, "I did it for years--not so." They ordered and replaced the switch. I picked up the car and returned straight to the dealer. Cruise not working, though new switch illuminates nice. They had not tested the car! Mechanic drove car with me in it (like I didn't know my own car was not fixed properly?!). Needed a new cruise "brain box." That was about $350, though it has worked fine since then.
Certainly there are failures that can occur at any-time within any of the independent onboard systems .. However when the cruise control and the check engine lights illuminate sitmontainsoly, the PCM failure needs to be addressed first! .. Then memory resets performed using a professional quality scan tool.... All modules!
Thank you!

I replaced the CAT and reset the memory by leaving battery disconnected overnight. Have driven over 200 miles and no check engine light. Cruise has not started working though.
