What is your question?
Took my car in after engine was making a rattling noise. It was diagnosed at a GM dealer and I was advised that the timing chain needed replacement and the estimate is about $1900. Car has 122K miles on it. Manual does not indicate that there is a need for timing belt maintenance so I'm confused and shocked with the amount estimated for the work. I want to make sure I'm not being taken advantage of.

Just by checking parts available on-line for the 2.4L hybrid , I believe it has a chain set-up. ALSO , what I see is what they call a 'valve timing sprocket' , IF I was you , I would inquire at the shop that has your vehicle , and ask for a PRINTED list of ALL PARTS they intend to replace , and a PRINTED diagnosis of the CAUSE of the noise BEFORE authorizing repair work. IF the tech diagnosing your car is confident of his skill/knowledge of this engine , then none of that should be a problem! they should be able to stand behind the diagnosis , IF I was them... I would be sure that the noise you are hearing is the same as what the tech is going to fix!!! I work at a dealer (not GM) and too often I see a car come in with multiple noises and the tech hears and fixes the one he perceives as the most urgent problem , then the owner is pissed because they didn't fix the little fuel injector tick that is what they were concerned about (which would be a NORMAL characteristic)--Follow me??? BE SURE they diagnose what you are hearing , It may sound simple and stupid , but simple and stupid , have prevented many incorrect repairs!
Well, I hope you didn't bite on that one. The timing chain is fine on the Vue unless two small parts on top of the timing chain box fail to supply oil to the timing box. this will manifest as error code P0452 and a lot of rattling noises that sound like engine knock. I took mine out and cleaned them with acetone and put them back. They are 45.00 per side to replace, which I will probably do if the error code returns. Changing the oil more often or your type of oil may be another solution. I was getting noise and asked a good local mechanic, who told me its a good engine, but if you don't keep it clean, you will be replacing it.
