I completely ran out of gas and now that I put gas in it I can't keep it started

Based on your discription, here's what I figure : You just thought it ran out of gas! .. Actually the crankshaft position sensor failed and that's the reason the engine stalled to begin with .. It cooled off while you refueled the car .. Then the engine started and ran ok until the crank position sensor heated up and failed again .. Then before it could cool off again, you kept cranking the engine until battery discharged itself .. There is an easy test that will prove that is what happened if you are interested.
