What is your question?
So i've had this problem for probably the last half month with the check engine light coming on, I thought it was the O2 sensor but I was proven wrong when that didn't fix it. My car will rough idle when it's heated up enough and fuel efficiency has gone out the window. I took it into a shop for diagnostic and the guy said he'd need to replace the valve cover and gasket for this which he charges 163 for parts and 130 for labor. I really cannot afford this and I want to be 100% sure this will fix my problem, what are other opinions? I'll also mention i'm a few hundred miles past when I was supposed to get my next oil change (used synthetic oil). All help and opinions are appreciated!
What makes this problem better or worse?
Car doesn't have any problems while it just drives a short distance (5-10 minutes)
How long has your 2008 Saturn Astra had this problem?
Half a month roughly

Check for vacuum leaks, check oil level, make sure it is at the correct level, and try cleaning the MAF Sensor with CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner "ONLY"! Walmart has a CRC MAF & Throttle Body Single-Use Twin Pack, 1 Kit for $7.88 plus tax. Walmart #: 551652091. Follow the directions carefully, see if that helps.
What's the trouble codes numbers?
Only the lean code (171) present?
Yeah no other codes
Well that’s a lean condition - not enough fuel - OR - too much air. As stated in other answer - A professional quality scanner will make short work of this diagnosis - provided the operator is equally professional. â–ªï¸http://www.autocodes.com/p0171_saturn.htmlâ–ªï¸ Good luck!
There are no vacuum leaks that could be seen, the oil level is nominal and I tried cleaning the MAF sensor originally and that didn't change anything it doesn't look that dirty anyway though. Does that cleaner do something that others don't?
you probably won't see a vacuum leak but you may hear it.yes, using any other cleaner will damage the MAF Sensor, and NEVER touch the tiny wires. If you can't find the problem,it's probably time for a Pro with a scan tool to find your problem,it cost to have this done by a Pro,but will save you money in the long run.good luck....
